Who is the only batsman to have scored more than one hundred in India-England one-dayers? (28 January 2002)
South African-born Robin Smith gained quite a reputation as one of the
finest players of fast bowling during the 90s. Although many of his
stirring knocks came in the Test arena, the one-day stage also found
him to be a worthy competitor. In 71 one-dayers, the man known for his
rasping square-cuts made 2419 runs at an average of over 39. His
record includes four hundreds, two of which came against India.
Smith's first appearance against the Indians was all too brief; he
made a duck after playing just five balls. But he put his early
disappointments behind him in his third one-dayer against India at
Nottingham, a territory known for Robins - with Hoods and without
Hoods - down the years. His 105-ball 103 could not deny India,
propelled by a 44-ball 63 from captain Mohammad Azharuddin, a five-
wicket win.
His second and final hundred against the same opposition came three
years later. Promoted to open the batting, he made 129 off 145 balls,
hitting 12 fours and one glorious six, to guide his team to a fighting
total of 256. Azharuddin, however, stood in the way of an English win
yet again, seeing India secure a tight three-wicket victory.
