![]() The Cricket Clubs of PortugalThe Oporto Cricket & Lawn Tennis Club has been in existence (under one name or another) since 1855. The location of the clubhouse & grounds in the central Oporto suburb of Campo Alegre make the club by far the most prestigious cricket playing venue in Portugal.Lisbon Casuals Sports Club is the venue for all of the cricket played in and around the Portuguese capital although despite its name, the club is situated in the town of Carcavelos, some 20 kms west of Lisbon. Because of this involuntary monopoly, all the cricketers playing in the Lisbon area are required to take out membership of this club in order to make use of the facilities and the consequently large cricket section is split into 7 individual teams, each of which is a "cricket club" in its own right. 1 of 8: is A.C.C. Formed in 1994 under the presidency of Akbar Saiyad, A.C.C. have been the champion club side in Portugal since league cricket began. The nomenclature "A.C.C." has in truth no official meaning although it is sometimes referred to as "Akbar's Cricket Club" or "Asian Cricket Club" or occasionally "Alternative Cricket Club". 2 of 8 is Areeiro C.C. although having been in existence since 1997, Areeiro only joined the Lisbon League in the 2001 season after having entered a team in the local 6-a-side Indoor league. 3 of 8: is Carcavelos C.C. which august name has a history dating back to the 1890's. The club of this name has been in & out of existence several times in the 20th century but has now taken on a new appearance but with traditional roots. 4 of 8: Cavaliers C.C. as the name implies, a high-spirited and "ne'er say die" attitude to cricket epitomises this team who draw the majority of their members from language school teachers and are in fact sponsored by the Lisbon based Oxford School of Langauages. 5 & 6of 8: are CHP "A" & CHP "B" ; two teams drawn from the strong and sports oriented Hindu community in Portugal (Comunidade dos Hindus Portuguesa) 7 of 8: Lispak C.C. is one of the new teams to enter the Portuguese League in 2000. Comprised mainly of players of Pakistani origin based in Lisbon ( hence Lis-Pak) this team includes several players who previously played for the now defunct Panthers C.C. and Lisbon Casuals. 8 of 8: Oeiras C.C.takes its name from the town of Oeiras which is adjacent to Carcavelos and possibly the most likely venue of an additional cricket ground in the future. Formed in 2000 the team has a strong colonial flavour. If you wish to contact any of these clubs, please refer to the following list:
