Oman profile2004 Wisden Almanack reviewCricket in Oman only really became organised in 1979, but officials are proud of the indigenous participation. There are about 110 Omani nationals (most of them Arabs) playing amongst the 60 teams that compete in eight divisions. Teams are obliged to include one Omani, or otherwise field ten players, and the Omani must bat in the top five. Raha and Muscat are generally Oman’s leading clubs, faring well in the United Arab Emirates’ main domestic competitions, the Ramadan Floodlit tournament and the Bukhatir League. Although cricket’s popularity has increased in recent years it still lags behind soccer, hockey and tennis in the hearts of Omanis. Madhu Sampat |
