2004 Wisden Almanack review
Pianoro retained the Championship with a remarkable comeback after Gallicano slumped, having won the first eight games of the 14-round event. Bologna finally won a major trophy, the Italian Cup, and again Gallicano were unlucky, losing the final by five runs. The national youth teams did not perform particularly well with the notable exception of the off-spinner and opening batsman, Francesco Scarponi, who starred with both bat and ball during the Under-19 World Cup qualifier in Holland. A five-year plan to introduce cricket in state schools all over the country was launched, and the Italian Cricket Academy in Hobart, run by Peter Di Venuto, Michael’s older brother, was successfully inaugurated.
