Rowledge CC Review 2000 (written by Graham McCoy)

After finishing HL1 runners-up in 1999, the club was optimistic in making a sustained challenge for SPL3 honours last season. Unfortunately, this failed to materialise largely due to the fact that the Rowledge batsman failed to find any consistent form.

The bowling department worked well with Australian Glen Tisdale and Chris Yates (who represented the HCB Board X1 and Hampshire 2nd X1 throughout the season) forming arguably the most potent attack in the league. Comfortable wins over Paultons and OT's & Romsey was followed by defeat at home to Gosport. The one and only significant batting display came at home, which saw a 73 run win over Easton & Martyr Worthy.

However, the following week a 9 wicket defeat at the hands of runners-up Sparsholt effectively left us out of the running. The rest of the season saw mixed results, but a creditable final position was still achieved. At no one time in the season was their less than four teenagers in the side which all bodes extremely well for the future.

Belligerent opener Darren Mitchell led the way with the batting, but the disappointing aspect was only two other batsman scored over 200 runs and not one player achieved over 300. Glen Tisdale took the accolades with the ball while youngster Ricky Yates emerged as a genuine all rounder. 15 year olds Chris Brinsden, Tom Markham and Matt Burchill all look fine prospects and made a number of 1st XI appearances throughout the season.

Paul Tanner, after five successful seasons in charge, has stepped down to be succeeded by David Booton will take over the captaincy. Rowledge Colts reached the Surrey final of the Sun Life Financial of Canada Under-15 Championships, losing a closely fought game to the eventual winners, Banstead.

Off the field, the club continues to invest heavily to improve facilities. New and expanded practice nets, along with covers and improved toilets and changing rooms, are just a number of areas which should be in place this season.
