Despite a promising start, Paultons' eventual mid-table finish to the 2001 season was largely due to a series of injuries that weakened the team's strength.New players John Robinson, Simon Sargent, the evergreen Terry Azor and Colin James all settled in well. In his second spell as a Paultons player, Colin James had an outstanding season, totalling 502 runs in 8 innings at an average of over 62. He scored three centuries during the summer: at St Cross Symondians (104), Rowledge (114) and in the home game against United Services II (133), when a club-record total of 412-5 was posted in 50 overs.
Andy Collins also made a century (106) in this game, with Tony Richman the only other batsman to achieve this milestone, with 103 against Lymington.
Although Steve Mitchell topped the bowling averages with 10 wickets at 17.6 apiece, Peter Lamb was the main Paultons wicket-taker with 24 at an average of 22.5. Other significant contributors were Paul Wilde (16), Tony Richman (15) and Terry Azor (15).
Snooker king Azor also filled-in as replacement wicket keeper towards the end of the season. (Is there anything this man can't do ?).
Injuries to Andy Darnton, Andy Collins, Lee Rayner and captain Duncan Park meant that they all missed important games in the second half of the season. However, younger players were able to profit from the absence of their more experienced colleagues. Andy Denney and teenager Mark Weaver, in particular, stepped up and performed well at the higher level, Weaver averaging over 26 in some gritty, hard-fought innings when durability was required.
