South Wilts Cricket Club - Formed 1854
Potted history
The first record of a match on the present ground at Bemerton is in 1854
when South Wilts played the Gentlemen of England. The ground is owned by
the Wilton Estate and has a Church at each bottom corner. The older one,
St.Andrew's, is famous for its association with George Herbert, the
celebrated poet and hymn writer, who was rector there in the 1630s.
Perhaps the most famous cricketer to have played on the ground was Dr.
W.G.Grace and there is a photograph in the club house of him leaving the
field of play in 1902 at the tender age of 54.
The club takes part in the cricket of four counties, Wiltshire, Berkshire,
Hampshire and Dorset. It's involvement in the Southern and Hampshire
Leagues mean that most of its fixtures are held in Berkshire, Hampshire
and Dorset. Nevertheless the club maintains a strong traditional link
with Wiltshire and has a long record of providing players for the
Wiltshire Minor County side.
The club has enjoyed some memorable successes in its more recent history:-
1990 - Southern League WINNERS, Wiltshire Senior Cup WINNERS, Sun Life of
Canada National Under 15 WINNERS.
1991 - Echo Trophy WINNERS.
1992 - Wiltshire Senior Cup WINNERS.
1999 - Southern League Runners-up.
