The school report would probably read "should do better." Work commitments, weddings, barbeques and a nasty bout of World Cup fever left an already thin squad short on a number of occasions.Two early season 50-over victories by a single run should have been the catalyst for better things. James Hibberd came of age as a batsman, dominating attacks with sickening ease. His 466 runs and 31 wickets placed him head shoulders and waistline above anyone else in the side. This is not to say others did not contribute. Christof Bothma was a handful for any side with the new ball and Matt Metcalfe, at 16 years of age, would have taken more than his 18 wickets but for the restrictions on overs and unavailability due to Hampshire YC games.
Matt has joined the Academy at the Rose Bowl this season. The batting was below par and a number of experienced players failed to produce their best. Too often it was the middle to late order rescuing the team with only mediocre totals. Tommy Pegler (335 runs) offered good support with the bat, including a sparkling century against Liphook & Ripsley.
It wasn't until a well deserved win over Bournemouth, three games from the end of the season,
that relegation was no longer a threat.
