Subscription Information for the 'US Cricketer'
The US Cricketer (information correct as of 29Mar94)
_US Cricketer_ is a quarterly magazine published out of Bloom-
field, New Jersey. It is edited by Gowton Achaibar and Tony Bec-
ca and includes such contributors as Ayaz Menon and Qamar Ahmed.
It is aimed at the North American reader with roots in any Com-
monwealth country, and as such does not specialize in any partic-
ular country; it attempts to cover any cricket played anywhere in
the world that somebody might be interested in. Complete reports
and statistics on all test matches and on many other competitions
are included, although since this is a quarterly publication,
this is not the place to get your "hot-off-the-press" test match
reports. (I would think, however, that it would be a good place
to have them collected for future reference--unless you buy a
_Wisden_ every year.)
The magazine also carries reports of cricket league activities in
North America, not just in the New York/New Jersey area, but in
Florida, California, Michigan, Texas--wherever they manage to get
reports from, and each issue seems to get reports from more
places. There's a listing of leagues with contact information,
and other leagues are urged to send in information to be listed.
What I like best about the magazine are the articles, many of
which are historical and discuss some great player of the past or
some memorable match. There has been an ongoing series of arti-
cles about the history of cricket in the US that I have found
quite interesting.
The people putting together this magazine seem to be very aggres-
sive about promoting both the magazine and cricket in general in
North America, and they also seem to be real go-getters in terms
of selling advertising and establishing a sound business. The
magazine is printed on glossy paper with many colored pages (or
coloured if you prefer). The advertisements in the earlier is-
sues were almost entirely from West Indian businesses, reflecting
a magazine staff that seems to be dominated by West Indians, but
I don't see any West Indian bias in the editorial content. They
really are trying to be universal in their coverage, and lately
they are getting more advertisements from businesses in the South
Asian community. (There is most definitely a "people of color"
flavor to the magazine as a whole, but I see no reason why an ex-
patriate Australian or Briton in North America wouldn't enjoy the
articles. They do pitch their advertising space at those who are
looking to reach the ethnic market, though.)
The advertisements are also a good question to find answers to
that perennial question we see here on this newsboard, "Where can
I buy cricket equipment in this Godforsaken land?" Several North
American suppliers of cricket equipment advertise here.
The magazine is quarterly, and is into its second volume, Volume
2 No. 1 having just been published. There were only three issues
in the first volume since the first issue was Spring 93, so there
are now four issues out. Subscription rate is $10 per year. I
called their information phone number before subscribing (201-
731-9409) to ask whether it was too late to get the first issues,
and they said they would start my subscription with whichever is-
sue I specified. So I told them to start my issue with Volume 1
No. 1 and sent them $20. Just a couple of days ago I got the
first four issues all together, and now I have a year's subscrip-
tion to run. I don't think they take credit card orders over the
phone or anything; the number is just there for questions and in-
formation. To subscribe you send a check or money order to
US Cricketer Inc., 160 Orange Street, Bloomfield, NJ 07003.
(and indicate which issue you want to start with, as I said).
