CRICINFO WOMEN'S WORLD CUP POINTS TO
BRIGHT GLOBAL FUTURE FOR WOMEN'S CRICKET

IWCC President acclaims Internet coverage
as tournament is followed worldwide

18 January 2001

The CricInfo Women's World Cup, which took place last month in New Zealand, gave women's cricket its biggest global exposure ever, and united the ICC and the IWCC in their optimism for the future of the women's game. The exposure the tournament received globally, in particular via the CricInfo website, which recorded visitors from more than 100 countries, was an unprecedented success.

New IWCC President Christine Brierley hailed the tournament as a hugely significant event for the women's game. "The International Women's Cricket Council, through the CricInfo coverage, has recognised the importance of promoting the game to this global community and we look forward to a range of possible futures in this great game."

Of the influence of CricInfo's coverage on the game itself, she said "New technology brings with it a new responsibility into how the game is played, where it is played and how it is administered. The world is watching."

Andrew Eade, Development Manager at the ICC remarked "This tournament has impressed everyone in terms of its profile, organisation, and the quality of cricket played.

"The success of CricInfo's coverage shows that women's cricket is a highly attractive sport in its own right which can reach and entertain people on a global scale."

The tournament's official web site run by sponsors CricInfo, wwc2000.cricinfo.com, recorded 3.6 million page impressions with people logging on from more than 100 different countries to follow the action. The site offered users live audio and video coverage of all 31 matches, live scorecards, news, player diaries, images and competitions. The final, which generated the tournament's largest internet audience, saw hosts New Zealand overcome holders and favourites Australia by four runs in the last over.

CricInfo also contributed to the exposure of the tournament by supplying content to traditional media organisations as diverse as the BBC (global), SAPA (South Africa), The Week (India) and Yes FM (Sri Lanka).

Adrian Motherway, CricInfo New Zealand's Chief Executive said: "The CricInfo Women's World Cup was hugely successful for us, with the women's game proving to be highly popular as well as providing us with a very competitive tournament. We pulled out all the stops to give the event our most comprehensive coverage ever, with every match being broadcast live. It has set down a marker for future coverage of cricket on the Internet."
