Ten wicket haul for the rookie off spinner
The Ranji Trophy North Zone League tie between Delhi and Services at
the PCA Stadium in Mohali in the 1999-2000 season was the occasion of
Sarandeep Singh's first ten wicket haul in first class cricket. The
hosts were fresh from a 196 run drubbing of Himachal Pradesh in their
pipeopener, Sarandeep having warmed up nicely with four wickets and a
59 ball fifty for good measure.
Punjab won the toss and took first strike, a double century by Pankaj
Dharmani being the cornerstone of a massive score of 533/6, before
declaring in the 143rd over of the innings. By the end of the second
day, Services had slumped to 76/4, only one of the scalps falling to
Sarandeep. Next day, the 20 year old off spinner was in more
destructive nick, wrapping up the last five wickets in the space of 36
balls from his end. Sarandeep ended with analysis of 6/41 from 19.1
overs as Services were bundled out for 171, conceding a huge first
innings deficit of 362.
Punjab skipper Vikram
Rathour had no compunctions about enforcing the follow on and at
stumps on the third day, Services were halfway to an innings defeat at
112/5. This time Sarandeep reserved his venom for the hapless
Servicemen at the top of the order, removing the first three with the
score at 42 in the 15th over.
He delivered the coup de grace as well, trapping last man S Kulkarni leg before from the last ball of his 22nd over to inflict
an innings and 173 run defeat on the visitors. Sarandeep's match
figures of 10/91 went a long way towards establishing his credentials
as a genuine matchwinner in his own right and not just a support
spinner to senior partner Harbhajan
Singh.
