TI Cycles of India Hercules Champions

Sriram's hour of glory at the Green Park

The Tamil Nadu-Uttar Pradesh encounter at Kanpur's Green Park in the 1999-2000 Super League was reduced to academic interest due to the fact that Tamil Nadu had already qualified to the knockout stage of the tourney. This afforded the Tamil Nadu lads some much needed match practice and they did not let go of the golden opportunity.

Electing to bat, Tamil Nadu lost opener S Ramesh early to Ashish Zaidi. This brought in Hemang Badani (62) to the center and in the company of Sridharan Sriram he forged a 109 run partnership for the second wicket in 33.3 overs. Sriram took control over the proceedings and went past his fifty off 121 balls. Once past the mark he increased his tempo and with the next 61 balls he notched up his century.

Sriram lost Badani (62) along the way when the latter was stumped by Manoj Mudgal off the bowling of Raza. But JR Madanagopal joined Sriram and ensured that Tamil Nadu lost no further wickets. Madanagopal while spending 244 minutes at the crease helped Sriram go past the 150 run mark.

The second morning saw the exit of Madanagopal, but Sriram was simply unstoppable. He continued to be solid and while displaying fluent strokes brought up his double century in the company of S Sharath. Before long Sharath joined the bandwagon and notched up his century. At the other end Sriram who was displaying some exquisite cricket went from strength to strength.

But the fact that he was nearing his triple hundred started to play on his mind and his scoring rate dropped drastically. The landmark proved to be elusive and he fell to Musi Raza after a 679 minute stay at the center. By the time he fell for 288, this innings of Sriram had become the third highest by a Tamil Nadu batsman in Ranji Trophy.
