Karnataka thrive on Beerala's consistency upfront (February 2000)
In the Super League game against Rajasthan at Bangalore,
Karnataka after being put in to bat lost Rowland Barrington to
the third ball of the innings. Mithun Beerala and Rahul Dravid
then came together in a century stand for the second wicket
inside 25 overs. In a rapid 78 ball outing in the middle, Beerala
lashed nine boundaries before his knock came to an end two runs
short of a half century when his stumps were rattled by spinner
DP Singh. Only Dravid scored more as Karnataka folded up for 243.
The bowlers led by Sunil Joshi struck back to send Rajasthan
reeling for 211. But with the 8 points accruing from an outright
victory being the crying need, Karnataka could not afford to
relax.
It was now upto the batsmen to consolidate the gains by notching
up an imposing total and they responded in telling fashion. After
Barrington's departure at 52, Beerala and Dravid, both St. Joseph
products, picked up from where they had left off in the first
innings. In the course of their 76 run association, Beerala
reached the fifty that had eluded him in the first knock, his
third of the season, off 86 balls. He was dismissed soon after by
RJ Kanwat for 59 (124 balls, 7 fours), which was again the second
highest score behind Dravid who went on to a hundred. Karnataka
declared at 326 and closed out a 139 run victory early on the
fourth morning.
