June saw the Sri Lankan team do what no other Test team had done in the history of the game...
win, for the second time, a three-Test series 2-1 after coming from 1-0 down. Our award for June goes to a newcomer to the Sri Lankan team
who was nevertheless a key figure in his team's series triumph.
After Sri Lanka's First Test loss at the end of May (in which our winner took a wicket with his fifth ball in Tests), they levelled the series at Galle with an innings victory, our player taking nine wickets with his left-arm spin to be a key figure in the victory. He took four more wickets in the decisive final innings of Sri Lanka's historic 164 run victory in the Third Test at Colombo. At twenty-three years of age he is a sound prospect for Sri Lanka's future and looks like being a worthy spin partner for Muralitharan and Dharmasena. Chosen as much as the outstanding rookie of the month as for anything else, the googler's Player of the Month for June 1998 is Sri Lanka's Mapa Lallalage Chandima Niroshan Bandaratilake.
