Mark Waugh is one of the world`s most gifted batsman, and it is only recently that his concentration has started to improve to the point where it is doing justice to his talents. Pre-innings nerves manifest themselves in Waugh as tiredness, and he has apparently had to be woken before going out to bat. His batting is characterised by an almost languid elegance, an air of casualness that is said to have delayed his debut in a team that values hard work and earnestness. `Junior` (he is younger than his twin Stephen by a few minutes) extends his genius to the field, where is has one of the team`s safest pair of hands at 2nd slip, and he has proven himself an effective partnership-breaker with decep- tively pacey seamers off a short run up. Recently he has taken to off-spinning. Now in his prime, one gets the feeling that Mark Waugh`s "magnum opus", his signature innings has not yet been played, although few who have watched it will forget his century on Test debut against England in 1990/91, a symphony of right handed cuts, drives, pulls and lofted shots executed with effort- less ease.
