Aravinda de Silva to retire after World Cup
Anand Vasu - 27 September 2002

In 286 one-day internationals spread over almost eighteen years, Aravinda de Silva has never won the man of the match award for his bowling. Showing grit and character the veteran sent down 10 overs for just 16 runs, including the crucial wicket of Matthew Hayden. For his effort de Silva was deservedly adjudged the Man of the Match.

"This is the first time I'm getting the Man of the Match award as a bowler," said an excited de Silva. "I was surprised that there was a bit in the wicket so early, but really enjoyed my spell."

De Silva speaking about plans of retiring after the World Cup, cherished this performance "I was glad to be able to do what I did, considering that this is the last series that I will play in Sri Lanka. Whenever I get the opportunity I would like to take up the challenge of bowling. I am definitely going to finish after the World Cup. I have to speak to selectors and see if they want me for the World Cup and then decide what to do," said the veteran.

He did quickly add, "there are some good youngsters coming through in Sri Lankan cricket and I would like to go out on a high."

Looking forward to the final of the Champions Trophy against the Indians, de Silva said, "I feel that Sri Lanka are the better side. In my mind we are favourites but we can't put pressure on ourselves and must believe in ourselves when we take the field."

Contrary to popular opinion, de Silva did not think the wicket turned excessively. "It didn't take that much turn but it was a bit slow and low. If they got 225 it would have been tough for us to chase," he said, echoing Ponting's comment.

Having lost weight and got to top fitness just recently, de Silva did not think bowling so much was a burden. " I Would like to keep bowling whenever I get the opportunity. I really enjoy bowling and if I bowl more, I'm kept busy on the field that's good," he said.
