Somerset had to settle for third place when they travelled to Oundle School in Northamptonshire for the final stages of the 2002 ESCA Under 13 competition. In the semi finals Somerset lost to a strong Yorkshire side, who were the eventual winners. Batting first Yorkshire scored 240 from their 40 overs with Somerset skipper Jack Cooper taking four wickets. In reply Somerset were bowled out for 170, with Cooper again to the fore making 75 runs. In the third place play off Somerset enjoyed victory over Warwickshire. After scoring 173 Somerset bowled their opponents out for 120. Somerset Youth Development Officer Pete Sanderson told me: "For a side that is improving all the time to be third in a national competition is very pleasing indeed, and a creditable performance." © SOMERSET
