ACB Ricky Ponting ruled out of match against Kenya, Gilchrist to stand in as captain
Australian Cricket Board - 5 September 2002

Australian one-day international captain Ricky Ponting has been ruled out of today's Tri-Nations Cup match against Kenya (Thursday 5 September) after suffering a minor strain to his left thigh muscle.

Ponting sustained the injury while batting during yesterday's nine-wicket win over Pakistan in Nairobi.

He will undergo treatment from Australian team physiotherapist Errol Alcott and will be assessed daily to determine his fitness for the tournament final on Saturday 7 September.

Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist will assume the captaincy responsibilities for the match. A replacement vice-captain will not be appointed.

Today's match will be the fourth time Gilchrist has captained Australia at the one-day international level, having led the side in three matches during the 2000-01 home Carlton Series.
