Thorpe confirms availability for Ashes trip
Stephen Lamb - 1 September 2002

Graham Thorpe has told the England management that he wants to take part in England's Ashes tour this winter, and will make himself available for Surrey for the last three weeks of the season to prove his case.

The 33-year-old Surrey left-hander announced after the first Test against India at Lord's in July that he was taking a complete break from cricket to spend more time with his children. He has not played in a competitive match since.

Thorpe, who averages just under 46 against the old enemy, told a Sunday newspaper: "I spoke to Duncan [Fletcher, the coach] and told him I want to be considered for Australia.

"Duncan took on board the reasons for my decision and, although he made no commitment to me, it was important for me to let him know where I stand.

"I know Duncan and Nasser [Hussain, the captain] will be concerned that the risk in taking me might be too great. But all I can do is try to assure them of my focus and commitment.

"There would be no point in making myself available if I wasn't utterly convinced that I would be able to cope with the situation. I will also make myself available for Surrey for the final three weeks of the season. It's important for me to demonstrate that my commitment is real. I'm ready."

The England captain, Nasser Hussain, yesterday confirmed that he has had discussions with Thorpe about the issue this week.

"We spoke in messages for about three days and I spoke to him at length for the last couple of days," Hussain explained.

"He has said to me he would like to go to Australia, but there are still problems he has to sort out and Graham has to convince himself and the selectors that he can get through.

"My hunch is that only Graham knows. Then the selectors have to decide if he is right mentally to get through the whole thing."

Thorpe returned home early from England's tour of India last winter. With the Ashes squad due to be announced on September 10, there is little time left to discuss the Surrey batsman's possible inclusion.
