A collection of Australian cricket's most prized silverware, including the 1999 World Cup and the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test Championship Trophy, will go on public display across Australia this summer, the Australian Cricket Board (ACB) and international tour sponsor Travelex announced today.
The Travelex Cricket Roadshow will see six trophies won by Australian Test and one-day international teams touring a host of capital city and regional locations from November 2002 to January 2003.
The collection also includes the:
The Travelex Cricket Roadshow, which also features public displays, player appearances and interactive events, follows the Australian team during the Orange Test Series and visits regional locations including Toowoomba, Orange and Mildura.
Australian fast bowler Brett Lee joined ACB Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland and Travelex Australia Managing Director Andrew Want at the launch of the Travelex Cricket Roadshow in Sydney today.
James Sutherland said the roadshow's role was to share the success of the Australian side with the country's legion of fans.
"Australia has enjoyed an enviable run of success in Test and one-day international cricket, and in doing so, has accumulated a collection of trophies of which Australian people can be justifiably proud," Mr Sutherland said.
"The Travelex Cricket Roadshow is a joint initiative of Travelex and the ACB, designed to take the spoils of Australia's cricket success to fans, giving them a chance to get close to this unique collection of trophies."
The roadshow will give cricket followers the chance to experience six items that are entrenched in Australian cricket history.
"The exhibition will help remind people about Australia's rich cricket heritage, which is an important component of the Australian Cricket Board's efforts in promoting the spirit of cricket," Mr Sutherland said.
Travelex's Andrew Want said the roadshow would provide a rare opportunity for cricket supporters to experience some of cricket's most coveted silverware.
"Travelex wanted to create a way for Australian cricket fans to get up close and personal with the trophies the Australian cricket team holds," Mr Want said.
"It's a unique and historic collection, and the Travelex Cricket Roadshow will provide an opportunity for fans to experience the prizes won from Australian cricket's successes on tour and at home.
"As well as taking the trophies on tour for the first time, we have planned a great program of interactive events at all the roadshow's venues.
"It is a first for Australian cricket and Travelex and the ACB believe it will generate a lot of interest and excitement throughout the summer and in the lead-up to next year's ICC World Cup."
Travelex is the official sponsor of the Australian team for next year's ICC World Cup to be played in South Africa in February and March 2003.
The roadshow's first stop is at Westfield Strathpine Shopping Centre in Brisbane on 5 November and is scheduled to finish in the New South Wales city of Wollongong on 7 January.
