Silverwood is latest England bowling casualty
Ralph Dellor - 30 November 2002

Chris Silverwood, the Yorkshire fast bowler who was drafted into the Ashes party when Simon Jones was ruled out with a knee ligament injury on the first morning of the series, has himself sustained an injury.

He had to leave the field after bowling four overs in the Australian first innings in Perth and a scan has revealed damage to his ankle ligaments. He has been ruled out of the remainder of this match and will have his fitness assessed in a week's time before a decision is taken about a possible return home.

England physio Kirk Russell explained the nature of Silverwood's injury. "He has a tear on the medial aspect of his left ankle and there are also signs of bony bruising on the other side of the ankle as a direct result of the tear. This is a new injury and not related to the joint inflammation he experienced in the same ankle at the end of the English season."

Silverwood said: "To say I'm frustrated is a massive understatement. I've waited a long time to get back into the Test side and really wanted to make an impact in this game - the only consolation for me is that it isn't a recurrence of the problem I had at the end of last season.

"I felt something go in the ankle on impact in the second ball of my second over and I decided to stay, on but the pain just got worse and worse and eventually I had to come off."
