Derbyshire secure Astle for overseas slot Derbyshire CCC Media Release - 28 November 2002
Derbyshire CCC are delighted to announce that New Zealand international batsman, Nathan Astle, has agreed to sign up for the second overseas player position available for season 2003. He is the holder of the world record for the fastest Test match double century, 222 from just 153 balls, against England last winter. Astle, 31, has scored over 3,000 Test runs and more than 5,000 ODI runs for the Black Caps, as well as demonstrating a canny knack of taking useful wickets with his medium pace bowling. He will be available to Derbyshire for 4 months, June – September 2003, as he will be part of New Zealand's tour to Sri Lanka until May 31st. "Although we shall not see Nathan for the whole season, all at the Club are thrilled that a player of his quality is available – he, like us, is looking forward to his time at the County Ground with great anticipation. Hopefully local cricket fans will share this, and come along and join as members and supporters for next season, " said Chief Executive, John Smedley. "As a quality international cricketer, Nathan will strengthen our existing squad to some tune – the thought of he and Michael Di Venuto batting together will give a lot of opposition bowlers a real headache!"
