KGA Gym march into semifinals Sports Reporter - 28 November 2002
Karachi Goan Association Gymkhana (KGA) entered the semifinal of the Dalpat R. Sonavaria Ramazan Cricket Trophy, beating Wakenhut CC by nine wickets Wednesday. Winning the toss and batting first Wakenhut made 123. Sharing the new ball Andre Bernard two for 21 and Freddie Decruze two for 23, made the early inroads for KGA Gymkhana. KGA were cruising along at 82 for one wicket in 12.4 overs when the captain of Wakenhut called his players off the field after a dispute with the umpires. Later the match was awarded to KGA Gymkhana. In another match a dashing 72 by Nariman, helped Mohinder Kumar Academy into the quarterfinals getting the better of Akhbar-e-Watan CC by 42 runs. Batting first Mohinder Kumar Academy raced to 170 for five wickets with M. Hussain also amongst the runs while scoring (34). Akhbar-e-Watan were restricted to 128 for five wickets. Fahad Azeem top scored with (37). Thursday's fixture: Baqai Dolphins v Bed & Bath CC 1-30 p.m. (quarterfinals). Dazzling Afsar A swashbuckling 96 by the Man of the Match Afsar Nawaz, coupled with an equally entertaining 69 by Azher Shafique, enabled Customs register a 42-run victory over Tapal CC in the Eighth Tapal Trophy Ramazan tournament played Wednesday. Having first use of the wicket Customs amassed 189 for four wickets. Imranullah finished off with figures of two for 35. Tapal fell short of the victory target by 42 runs, bowled out for 147 in 22.2 overs. Tabish Nawab three for 28, was the pick of the Customs attack. Blues in last 8 Karachi Gymkhana Blues hammering Karachi Gymkhana Whites in their last match in Group A, to march into the final on a better run rate in the 17th Karachi Gymkhana Callmate Festival played Wednesday. Blues won the toss and got off to a hurricane start when Azhar Khan (69) laced 12 boundaries and a six in 30 deliveries and Fahad Azeem (40), with six fours and a six off 19 deliveries, put on 107 runs for the first wicket. Left-hander Nadeem Moosa slamming 92 runs with five boundaries and six sixes off only 43 deliveries and Ahsan Jaffer (45) coming off 19 balls studded with six boundaries and two sixes, carried on the onslaught. Blues ended up with 353 for eight wickets in their 25 overs, the highest total todate in the championship, Zeeshan Essa three for 42 and Zulifiqar Ali three for 57 were the pick of the the bowlers. Karachi Whites made 95 runs for seven wickets in their allotted overs. Sohail Shahjani (25) and Mohammad Hussain (21) were the only batsmen to reach double figures. Nadeem Moosa three for 19 and Uzair Usman two for seven bowled well. With this victory KG Blues topped Group A with a plus 3.00 run rate. Sindh Police with a run rate of 2.18 were second, Nadeem Moosa was named the Man of the Match. Thursday fixtures: Malir Gym v Callmate 9 a.m., Customs v Sindh Police 1.00 p.m. Dashing Irfan A dashing 85 by Irfan Mushtaq enabled Dawood Sports reach the semi-final of the All Karachi Malir Super Cup Ramazan beating Pak Star CC by 73 runs Wednesday. Dawood Sports batting first after winning the toss, raced to 200 for four in their 20 overs with Atif Ali Zaidi weighing in with (49), and Shahid Aslam (47). Pak Star in reply were bundled out for 127 runs in their 20 overs, Kashif Hanif top scored 42 runs. Joining Dawood Sports in the semi-final was Youngsters Gymkhana, winners by five wickets over Rafah-e-Aam Gymkhana. Batting first, Rafah-e-Aamscored 176 for seven in the 20 overs, with Haris Bin Aziz (39), Shaharyar Sheikh (33) and Dr. Yousuf scoring 26. M. Naqi had a fine spell of three for 34. With Khurram Mansoor hammering 75, with excellent support from Azher Iqbal (46 n.o.) and Aamir Kalim (34), Youngsters reached the target for the loss of five wickets in 17.2 overs. Mohsin took three for 33. Thumping victory Candyland CC registered a thumping 10-wicket victory over UBL "D" in the Baqai Inter Academies Ramazan tournament played Wednesday. Winning the toss and batting first, UBL "D" were skittled out for 69 in 17.2 overs with Saad top scoring with 26. The wickets were shared by Idrees Mirza three for nine and Ahmer Farooqui three for 17. Candyland achieved victory after only 6.5 overs when their openers Waqas Haroon unbeaten with 44 runs, studded with seven boundaries off 24 deliveries and Danish Alvi (20 n.o.) reached the winning target of 72 runs without losing a wicket. Pak Gym in final Pak Gymkhana reached the final of the Sixth Nehal Siddiqui Ramazan Cricket Trophy beating Orient Stars by three wickets Wednesday. Batting first, Orient Stars scored 174 for six in their 20overs through Adnan Khan (64 n.o.) Ronnie Roberts (47) and Kashif Habib (20). Yahya Toor two for 37 and Ali Abbas two for 48, picking up the wickets. After a nail-biting finish, Pak Gymkhana reached the with the last delivery to spare, after losing seven wickets. Imran Ahmed (41), Asif Qayyum (37) Imran Nawaz (36), Ashfaq Ahmed (23) and Farman Ali (20 n.o.) made victory possible for their side. Jaffar Ali picked up three wickets for 36. © Dawn
