Queensland in box seat at Gabba against WA Ainsley Pavey - 25 November 2002
BRISBANE, Nov 25 AAP - The batting heroics of Queensland wicketkeeper Wade Seccombe put the Bulls in the box seat in the Pura Cup clash against Western Australia at the Gabba. The 31-year-old turned around a disasterous first-innings collapse on the first day with one of his most memorable innings today - an unbeaten 134-run charge which secured vital first innings points for the home side. The Warriors were struggling at 5-62 at stumps on the second day after collapsing in the face of some verocious bowling by Queensland paceman Joe Dawes (3-21) this afternoon. After resuming at 5-106, Queensland had looked in trouble early todfay when Lee Carseldine edged a catch to Warriors keeper Ryan Campbell off a swinging ball from Matthew Nicholson in the fifth over. But Seccombe, who has worked hard over winter on hitting straight, wrestled control of the contest to cruise to his first century in two years and set up a 103-run lead at the tea break. Queensland had been chasing the Warriors' first innings of 228 at lunch before Nicholson and Campbell struck again to remove Ashley Noffke for 38. Seccombe retaliated a few overs later, hitting three fours off an over by Nicholson on his way to his century - the first since his 151 scored in Melbourne against Victoria in 2000. After taking off his helmet and saluting his team-mates and a small but vocal Gabba crowd, Seccombe piled on another 34 runs with Nathan Hauritz (2) before two 50-run partnerships with tailenders Michael Kasprowicz (37) and Dawes (29). Queensland was all out for 331 before cutting through the Warriors batting order with the same precision the visitors used a day earlier to humble the Bulls. "I feel as though I have been hitting the ball very well this year and for the sake of the side and me personally I just hope it continues," Seccombe said. "I was just trying to keep it clear. I wasn't trying to worry about the scoreboard too much. I was just trying to play each ball on its merits. "It was a fantastic day for Queensland, to get that 100 run lead was crucial but the way we went out there and bowled showed good discipline. "We've got to go out tomorrow and keep putting the ball in the right spot and see what happens. "I have worked really hard in the off season. I am just trying to hit the ball straight. I haven't scored enough runs here as I should have. "To score 100 at home is a highlight for me. It is one I will definitely remember." Warriors opener Michael Hussey was out for a duck, a ball from Kasprowicz edged into the safe hands of Stuart Law for his 300th first-class catch. Law was forced off and will have the little finger on his left hand x-rayed after diving for a ball several overs later and jamming the finger into the ground. Kasprowicz was also ruled out of the action a few minutes later, straining his hamstring during a run up. The Warriors were 3-15 when Jimmy Maher took a superb catch off a ball from Dawes to oust Chris Rogers for five before the fast bowler combined with Seccombe to remove Marcus North (2) and Ryan Campbell (9). WA opener Murray Goodwin was run out by Carseldine in the last over of the day for 15, leaving Brad Hogg (19) and Matthew Nicholson (6) the task of reversing his side's fortunes tomorrow. © 2002 AAP
