The Barbados Nation Campbell shines despite setbacks
24 November 2002

At Black Rock West XI 139-5 in 62 overs vs East XI

A SOFT pitch and a heavily-grassed outfield cut just prior to the start of play, spoiled the opening day of the Barbados Cricket Association's inaugural zonal competition.

After a frustrating three-hour wait for the under-prepared pitch which was affected by mid-week showers, to dry out and the sward to be cut, captain Sherwin Campbell displayed his fighting qualities in a solid 74 in difficult batting conditions.

Campbell's crafty knock, which was spiced by four fours and two sixes off 198 balls in 183 minutes, allowed the West XI to reach a relatively respectable 139 for five off 62 overs.

Sent in to bat when play finally started, 50 minutes after lunch, Campbell and Philo Wallace shared an opening partnership of 49 as Hattian Graham and Brian Shepherd shared the new ball for the East XI.

The introduction of stingy left-arm spinner Derick Bishop, who had the amazing figures of 18-11-11-2 and off-spinner Ryan Austin, resulted in the first four wickets falling within the space of 26 runs on either side of tea.

Wallace was taken at short mid-wicket by Kenroy Williams off the probing Bishop while Austin, who finished the day with two for 67 off 23 overs, accounted for Adrian Jones, whose only scoring stroke was a six as the West XI went to tea at 60 for two.
