Western Australia secure first innings points
David Bebb - 14 November 2002

Western Australia claimed first innings points whilst thirteen wickets fell on day one of the four day Pura Cup match between Western Australia and Victoria at the WACA ground in Perth today.

Victoria were bowled out for just 110 before the scheduled tea break leaving Western Australia to face 44 overs before stumps. When stumps arrived the Warriors had not only erased the deficit, they had pushed the score to 134 for three wickets.

Apparently, Victorian captain Shane Warne was not sure what he should do if he won the toss and was rather hoping that Adam Gilchrist would win it for Western Australia. But the coin fell Victoria's way and Warne elected to bat first on a flat mildly cracking surface that had some juice beneath it.

Jason Arnberger and Jon Moss opened for Victoria. They put eleven runs on the board when Moss 4 (from 33 balls) was out leg before wicket to former South Australian pace bowler Paul Wilson.

Michael Klinger 4 (13 balls) was out caught behind by WA skipper Adam Gilchrist off the bowling of Jo Angel when the score was 26 for the second wicket. He Was the burly pace bowlers first wicket.

Brad Hodge 11 (35 balls) also fell caught behind by Gilchrist off Angel with the score now 46 for three wickets.

Having added one run to the total Graeme Rummans 1 (12 balls) was Michael Clarks first wicket leg before wicket. Victoria 47 for four and Lunch was taken at this point.

Ten minutes after the lunch break Jason Arnberger 38 (93 balls) was caught behind by Gilchrist off the bowling of Wilson and Victoria's fifth wicket fell at 57.

Cameron White 13 (21 balls) went leg before wicket to Clark and the score for the sixth wicket was 65.

Darren Berry made 8 (33 balls) before playing on to his stumps to be recorded as out bowled by Jo Angel when the score was 95 for seven wickets.

At 102 the eighth wicket fell. Shane Warne 25 (33 balls) playing the ball back to the bowler Jo Angel to be the big man's fourth wicket.

The final pair departed on consecutive Michael Clark balls. Michael Lewis 5 (21 balls) was caught behind by Gilchrist and Will Carr was out for a golden duck. Rookie Robert Cassell remained unbeaten 2 (15 balls) and Victoria were all out for 110 before tea.

For Western Australia, Jo Angel (4-29) and Michael Clark (4-33) did the bulk of the wrecking. Paul Wilson (2-18) took out both openers. Matthew Nicholson was the only other bowler used.

Michael Hussey and Justin Langer opened for WA, and when Langer 10 (14 balls) was out caught behind by Darren Berry off Michael Lewis, Western Australia had erased all but half of the Victorian lead. WA 54 for the first wicket.

Chris Rogers 12 (40 balls) played into the hands of first slip Cameron White to be Shane Warne's scalp. The second wicket down with 78 on the board.

Dual spinners were being used for the first time in a decade at the WACA with Warne working away from the River End and Cameron White brought on at the Members End. Before Western Australia could erase the deficit completely Michael Hussey 56 (88 balls) was bought unstuck trapped leg before wicket by White at 108 for the third wicket.

Champion test batsman Damien Martyn 23 (75 balls) and exciting batsman Ryan Campbell 23 (51 balls) negotiated the remaining overs until stumps, passing the Victorian total and arriving at 134 for three just after half past six in the evening.

For Victoria, five bowlers were used with the trio of White, Lewis and Warne reaping a wicket each in the extended session. Will Carr and Robert Cassell both as yet un-rewarded.

After play Jo Angel said "I think Adam [Gilchrist] wanted to bowl anyway. >From what I believe of Warnie [Shane Warne] he didn't really know what he wanted to do. I think he was hoping we [Western Australia] would win the toss so that he wouldn't have to make a decision."

"We were looking to bowl first, Blocker [Paul Wilson] and Nicho [Matthew Nicholson] bowled pretty well at the start. We had the first two wickets reasonably early. We had another couple just before lunch. Michael getting that one right on lunch was a fantastic result for us.

"Last game we all let ourselves down with a few straying down the leg side where they clipped away a few boundaries. I cant think of too many today where that happened. That was the difference I thought. We put the pressure on, luckily we got a few nicks, a few decisions went our way, hopefully we will continue on in the second innings.

"It doesn't bother me that much, I just try and play it like it was my first game. No difference to me. Obviously it is a nice milestone for me to arrive at. Hopefully thats not the end of it and that there is a few more there still to come."

Michael Clark was philosophical about his performance, "As Jo says, you get enough in the right areas it all happens. I am not running in trying to get guys out, I just bowl my line and length."

The plan for tommorow according to Jo Angel is "To bat, bat once is the key and hopefully we can bowl them out again and that'll do us."
