Western Province and Border cruise to Standard Bank Cup wins
Keith Lane - 13 November 2002

Namibia, making its debut in South Africa's premier domestic one-day competition, started the Standard Bank Cup clash against Western Province in Cape Town by restricting the hosts to 186 in the allotted 45 overs.

Had it not been for a 78 from debutante and man-of-the-match Jean-Paul Duminy and Renier Munnick scoring an undefeated 57, the Western Province team could have found themselves in a spot of trouble. The 124 run partnership allowed the hosts to reach the defendable total.

Namibia never got off to the start that they wanted, losing two quick wickets to Alan Dawson who returned figures of 5/14.

While Daniel Keulder (44) Jan Burger (33) were at the crease Namibia still had a glimmer of hope, but with no other batsman reaching double figures the visitors were bowled out for 124 in 38.4 overs giving Western Province the win by 62 runs and a bonus point.

In Durban rain interrupted the game on four occasions, putting KwaZulu-Natal under a lot of pressure. Winning the toss and fielding in conditions that was sure to bring rain and Duckworth/Lewis could have been Natal's downfall.

The first delay came at the start when an hour, but no overs, was lost due to a light drizzle.

After 28.3 overs with Border on 113/4 and Mark Bruyns scoring 41, play was interrupted for about 40 minutes, resuming with a reduction of four overs. A further 40-minute delay, after 29.3 overs and Border on 116/4, reduced the overs to 36.

On the restart Pieter Strydom (37) and Craig Sugden (30*) threw caution to the wind and helped the score to 177. Border scoring 61 runs in the final 6.3 overs to end on 177/5.

The KwaZulu-Natal target was adjusted to 194 and looked set to cruise past it with Monde Zondeki giving away 20 runs in his first two overs. Tyron Henderson was a lot tighter giving away five runs in his first five, and only, overs.

It was however the bowling of man-of-the-match Liam Graham who put the skids under the Natal top order. Wayward at times he managed to pick up four of the wickets to end with 4/35 off seven overs.

When rain finally put an end to the match, KwaZulu-Natal with Lance Klusener (22*), coming in at number nine, and Errol Stewart (15*) was on 134/7 and according to the Duckworth/Lewis method, still 19 runs behind the reduced target of 154 off 27.1 overs.
