Employment status of players clarified by New Zealand Cricket New Zealand Cricket - 6 November 2002
New Zealand Cricket chief executive Martin Snedden today moved to clarify issues surrounding the employment status of players who had previously been under contract to New Zealand Cricket and the Major Associations. "Under the terms of their previous contracts with New Zealand Cricket and the Major Associations players were independent contractors and not employees," Mr Snedden said. "At the beginning of the bargaining process with the NZCPA New Zealand Cricket took the express position that the negotiations were taking place under contract law and not the Employment Relations Act. It is New Zealand Cricket's stance that the Employee Relations Act does not apply to this process. "We agreed on a bargaining protocol with the NZCPA at the beginning of the negotiation process and we have complied with the terms of the bargaining protocol." © New Zealand Cricket
