Dawn Miandad, Wasim scoop most awards
7 May 2002

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Monday honoured country's stalwarts who established records at an impressive function.

Former captains Javed Miandad and Wasim Akram returned with bagful of mementos. But Hanif Mohammad remained the star of the evening when he made a rare public appearance.

Hanif was rewarded for his 337 against the West Indies at Georgetown in 1957-58 spanning over 970 minutes. "It gives me great pleasure that Pakistan is now a formidable team," he said in a brief statement.

Wasim, who has 414 Test wickets, including five wickets or more 25 times and two Test hat-tricks, said he was still enjoying the game which was making him to continue the sport.

Miandad, who disappeared after scooping eight mementos, said he had enjoyed his every appearance for Pakistan and looked at his career with pride.

Wasim Bari, who was awarded for his highest scalps behind the wickets, said it gave him great pleasure to see Pakistan had two excellent wicketkeepers in Rashid Latif and Moin Khan.

Jeff Crowe, the Black Caps manager, said his team were enjoying their visit in country though he admitted that heat was slowly becoming tough. He, nevertheless, praised the hospitality of the host board and termed them professionals running the affairs.

Director PCB, Brig Munawwar Ahmad Rana, in his welcome speech, thanked the visitors for fulfilling their commitment even in testing conditions. He said the visitors were entertaining the spectators and looked forward to a good second Test.

He said this October's home series against Australia would be known as the Golden Jubilee Test series. Pakistan celebrate their 50 years of Test cricket on Oct 16.
