Suffolk's giant-killing bid falls at the final hurdle Stephen Lamb - 29 May 2002
Hampshire have polished off an eight-wicket win over Kent County Board in their third round tie in the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy. Hampshire had Kent in trouble at Folkestone yesterday, reducing them to 145 all out with Chris Tremlett taking three of the wickets. Today they finished the job in style, with Derek Kenway (76) and Neil Johnson (66) copmpleting victory with 23 overs to spare. Yesterday's opening partnership of 159 between Michael Gough and Gary Pratt ensured a hefty win for Durham over Wales Minor Counties. Gough made 132 and Pratt 89 as Durham reached 301 for five in their 50 overs. With Wales 65 for two overnight, further rain has meant victory for Durham by 49 runs under the Duckworth/Lewis method. Surrey have reached 96 for one against Scotland in Glasgow, and there's still no play in the other two ties, between Cornwall and Worcestershire and Shropshire and Gloucestershire. Yesterday Suffolk embarrassed, but couldn't quite beat Northants. There was no such difficulty for the holders, Somerset, who advanced serenely to round four. There were also wins for Glamorgan, Kent, Leicestershire, Nottinghamshire, Sussex, Warwickshire and Yorkshire. Suffolk came close to causing the upset of the day at Bury St. Edmunds. After managing just 128 for nine in their 50 overs, the hosts then reduced Northants to 104 for eight. It took cool heads from Russell Warren (21) and Darren Cousins (17) to enable the visitors to squeeze through to 132 for nine, a one-wicket win. A century from Peter Bowler set up what proved to be a winning total for the holders, Somerset, against Yorkshire Cricket Board at Scarborough. Bowler put on 148 for the second wicket with his skipper Jamie Cox, who made 64. Somerset were deprived of a larger total by the efforts of medium-pacer Richard Pyrah, who took five for 50 as the professionals faded from 203 for three to 255 for nine. However the hosts were always struggling after they were reduced to nine for three in their reply, and Somerset completed an 87-run victory. Glamorgan coasted to victory by six wickets after bowling Lincolnshire out for just 154 at Sleaford. That was something of an improvement after Andrew Davies (five for 19) and Michael Kasprowicz (three for 28) had reduced the home side at one stage to 21 for four. Steve James (47) and Adrian Dale (43*) saw Glamorgan home with 12 overs to spare. A lightning quick half-century from Matthew Fleming set Kent up for a 191-run thrashing of Norfolk at Manor Park. The skipper made 56 off only 38 balls, including eight fours and a six. Robert Key (77) and David Fulton (62) then powered Kent to 341 for six off their 50 overs. Norfolk struggled to just 150 for eight in their reply. Leicestershire found it rather harder going against Warwickshire Cricket Board at Bulls Head Ground. The county side reached just 208 for seven from their 50 overs on a rain-interrupted morning, and that was boosted by 49 late in the innings from Vince Wells, who was unbeaten at the close. There were three wickets apiece for Naheem Sajjad and Graham Wagg. Despite a battling 72 from Huw Jones, the home side could get no more than 182 for eight, 26 runs short of Leicestershire's total. Ireland went down to Nottinghamshire by eight wickets at Clontarf. After Greg Smith and Andrew Harris helped reduce the hosts to 48 for five, Kyle McCallan (30 not out) and Derek Heasley (26) helped lift the total to 164 off 50 overs. The professionals made light of it, with an unbeaten 64 from Usman Afzaal seeing them to an eight-wicket win with 12 overs to spare. At Wilton Park, 95 from wicket-keeper Tim Ambrose set up a win for Sussex over Buckinghamshire. Ambrose, 19, shared a second-wicket stand of 112 with Bas Zuiderent (50), and Tony Cottey then chimed in with 42 as Sussex closed on 268 for six. Despite an unbeaten 55 from Bobby Sher, Buckinghamshire were never up with the required rate and the visitors completed a 125-run victory. Craig White led the way for Yorkshire after their game against Devon at Exmouth got under way late. White made 87 and Darren Lehmann finished unbeaten on 54 as Yorkshire posted 259 for five from their 50 overs. It was enough to secure a 143-run victory. Alan Richardson saved Warwickshire from possible embarassment after another delayed start at Stone. Warwickshire were bowled out for just 192 by Staffordshire, with David Womble (three for 42) playing a key role in the clean-up. But Richardson then took five for 35 as Staffordshire mustered only 142 in reply, leaving Warwickshire victors by 50 runs. © CricInfo Ltd. |
