Players heading to Darwin for specialist tuition New Zealand Cricket - 28 May 2002
New Zealand Cricket is sending three players selected for the upcoming West Indies Test matches and nine other players to an intensive assessment, preparation and development camp in Darwin next month. According to New Zealand Cricket operations manager John Reid the three Test players, Chris Martin, Mark Richardson and Robbie Hart will head to Darwin first where they will undergo a specialised programme to prepare them for the upcoming Test series in the West Indies. "Those players will be in Darwin from June 5 through to June 11 preparing specifically for the West Indies Test series under the guidance of New Zealand Cricket player development manager, Ashley Ross," said Reid. "Pace bowlers Joseph Yovich and James Franklin will travel with them to help with bowling duties and Canterbury Wizards leg-spinner Aaron Redmond, who is already playing club cricket in Darwin, will also join them. "On June 8 we will also be sending over seven players who the selectors feel could benefit from some specialist one-day cricket tuition. They will undergo a intensive assessment programme so we can identify areas that need to be improved and then construct methods to help them to progress to their potential." The players in Darwin from June 8 to June 12 are Richard Jones, Andre Adams (batsman only due to injury), Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Mathew Sinclair, Glen Sulzberger and Brooke Walker. Yovich and Franklin, who will already be in Darwin with the Test players, will also join this group. The players will be using the facilities of the Northern Territory Cricket Association and the Northern Territory Institute of Sport. "Many of the players in the group have had a taste at the top level but have been unable to secure a permanent position there," said Reid. "It's important to New Zealand Cricket that these players are given the opportunity to develop and improve so they are ready to step up to the next level when called upon," said Reid. © New Zealand Cricket
