Sri Lanka make entertaining start at Cardiff
Stephen Lamb - 23 May 2002
Alex Wharf took revenge after he was dispatched for 17 runs off his first five balls by Sanath Jayasuriya. Wharf dismissed both openers in the opening session of the tour match between Glamorgan and Sri Lanka.
Wharf struck to end Jayasuriya's opening partnership with Russel Arnold at
97, when Sri Lanka's captain edged a ball to wicket-keeper Mark Wallace after scoring 57 from a mere 44 balls.
Jayasuriya's innings had included four sixes, two of them off the first and third balls of Wharf's opening over, and six fours. Wharf then trapped Arnold lbw for 46.
That was Glamorgan's last breakthrough of the morning, as Sri Lanka produced some wonderfully entertaining batting to reach 170 for two off 35 overs by lunch. Kumar Sangakkara and Hashan Tillekeratne kept the scoreboard moving at nearly five runs an over. Only Robert Croft managed to apply the brakes, with five consecutive maidens after he was brought on to bowl the 26th over of the morning.
But it was Croft who gave Tillekeratne a let-off as Sri Lanka reached 150 in the 29th over. Croft missed a catch off Simon Jones at first slip. At lunch Sangakkara was on 45 not out, with Tillekeratne unbeaten on 17.
