Somerset complete their first win inside 3 day's
Richard Walsh - 11 May 2002

Somerset answered their early season critics when they scored a resounding victory over Yorkshire at Taunton this afternoon.

Set to score 262 to win the Cidermen raced to their target in style, and before teatime on the third day the match was all over.

The Somerset hero of the day was Marcus Trescothick who scored an impressive 134 and received a standing ovation from the large crowd when he returned to the pavilion having put his team within touching distance of their target. In all Marcus faced 177 balls, and hit 3x6's and 18x4's.

The Somerset skipper was well supported by Peter Bowler who remained unbeaten on 79, as Somerset reached their target for the loss of three wickets to record a well deserved seven wicket victory over last season's champion county.

After the game Somerset coach told me: "This was another excellent day for us and a great result for the boys. A lot of credit must go to the team and also of course to Phil Frost who produced an excellent wicket for us to play on. This was one of the most compelling games of cricket that I have ever seen."

Somerset chief executive Peter Anderson told me: "This was a great team performance with impressive individual contributions from Andy Caddick, Marcus Trescothick, Ian Blackwell and Peter Bowler, who all did their part to help to bring it home for us."
