Basingstoke throw spanner into works at Rose Bowl Richard Isaacs - 25 March 2002
Basingstoke & North Hants have thrown a spanner into the works at the head of the Nat West Hampshire Under 16 Cricket League by defeating both the front-runners in a run-out strewn night at the Rose Bowl. The Mays' Bounty side, who before the start of play were struggling to be part of the play-off picture, proceeded to thrash both second placed St Cross and then put leaders Fair Oak to the sword. It leaves Havant, who have their remaining two games on the last night of the league programme next week, with a golden opportunity to take the title, should they collect 22 points. A stubborn 36 from Jack Lovett was the only resistance St Cross put up as their running between the wickets left much to be desired, succumbing to five run-outs on their way to a dismal 76 all out. Mitchell Stokes and Matt James both hit 25s for Basingstoke as they cantered to victory with over three overs to spare. Fair Oak, who have booked their place and can only sit and hope Havant slip up against Mudeford and B.A.T.Sports on March 24, relied on James Scutt and Chris Rose for their 105-4 total. Rob Tatnell chipped in with a timely 27 late on. But, once again the boys from the north stole the show but left it until the last ball to scramble the single they needed to secure the points and fell the Oak. James was again in form with a second 25 of the night. The real run-out frenzy came as the top two met head-to-head. Scutt with 30 and Rose (33) led Fair Oak to a challenging 119-5, all five wicket going the way of being short of the ground. The Winchester side were set well on their way to victory through solid innings' of 28 from Robert Miller and James Burridge. Tom Postle also contributed well, striking a competent 20. However, requiring six to win from Paul Malone's final over, the panic button was well and truly pressed as four batsmen came and went courtesy of run outs to leave them one run short at 118-4. © SPCL
