Somerset spring newsletter sent out to all members
Richard Walsh - 18 March 2002

All 7,000 or so members of Somerset County Cricket Club have now received a copy of the Spring Newsletter, which was mailed out last week.

The newsletter contains a variety of interesting material including articles from, amongst others, Jamie Cox, Kevin Shine and Peter Anderson.

In his article Somerset captain Jamie Cox makes it quite clear that he has set his sights on winning the coveted County Championship, the only prize that the Cidermen have never won in their history.

Jamie, who has enjoyed a record-breaking season in Tasmania this winter, concludes: "It certainly inspires me to think that I may be remembered as part of Somerset's first Championship winning team."

However the skipper also issues a stern warning regarding the danger of complacency.

He says: "Increased success also increases expectation and many teams have been undone by almost trying too hard and placing unnecessary pressure on themselves. It is this that Kevin Shine and myself must guard against by continually stimulating and challenging the players to want to experience it all over again."

There is also a fascinating article from Somerset Coach Kevin Shine regarding the introduction of technology and new training methods to help the players in their quest for even greater success and more trophies.

In his article Chief Executive Peter Anderson also warns about the dangers of complacency and reminds the players: "Standards of county cricket are rising as players become fitter, more motivated and therefore competitive. The teams biggest enemy is complacency, so watch it Somerset!"

The Chief Executive outlines the likely format for the future of first-class cricket in England, and also talks about the perennial problems of finance.

Mr Anderson also raises the question of changing from a Members' Club to a Private Limited Company, and inevitably the issues of relocation or redevelopment of the County Ground are also mentioned.

The Spring Newsletter is an update of how things have developed over the winter, and provides an insight into what lies ahead during the coming season.
