Dilmah Sponsorship
BCCSL - 2 March 2002
The ICC informed the BCCSL that Pepsi was a Co-sponsor of the ICC Champion's Trophy and the World Cup 2003 Tournament, only on the 7th January 2002, and according to the Agreement signed between the ICC and GCC (TV rights holder) iced/hot tea cannot be advertised during these two tournaments, as it is claimed by Pepsi to be a competitive product.
The BCCSL signed a short form agreement with Ceylon Tea Services Ltd (Dilmah) in October 2001 as the Sri Lanka Team Sponsor for 3 years. At the time of signing this agreement with Dilmah, BCCSL was unaware of any restriction on the advertising of tea, as the ICC had not at any time advised the BCCSL against entering into a team sponsorship agreement with a non-alcoholic beverage producer.
The BCCSL has raised objections with the ICC on the issue, which are to be taken up for discussion at the Executive Board meeting to be held in Cape Town, South Africa on the 15th and 16th of March 2002 and the matter is expected to be resolved.
