Somerset's cricket girls are doing well
Richard Walsh - 19 June 2002

Somerset girl's cricket has got off to a very good start this season. Following the success of the Somerset Under 15 team against the Isle of Wight at Kingswood School in Bath recently, teams from within the county dominated the cricket section of the Under 13's Western Counties Games that were held at Millfield School recently.

In excess of 2000 youngsters from nine different local authorities took part in the games, and of the nine girls teams that competed in the cricket, Somerset teams finished in the top three spots.

Somerset Cricket Development Officer Andrew moulding told me: "I am delighted to be able to say that of the teams that entered Bath and North East Somerset finished in top place followed by Sedgemoor and North Somerset."

Mr Moulding continued: "We only entered three teams and they took the first three places which is very pleasing. In the final match Sedgemoor needed two runs off the final ball, which they couldn't manage, so Bath and North East Somerset came out the winners."

There was also considerable interest from the girls in the Nat West Ineteractive Cricket Zone that formed part of the Bath and West Show. The Cricket Development Officer told me: "The Interactive Zone was a great success and was staffed everyday by coaches qualified coaches from Somerset. There was a particular interest from the girls and we are hopeful that some them will become involved with their local clubs."
