Late order hitting rescues Pakistan AAP - 8 June 2002
BRISBANE, June 8 AAP - Pakistan wrapped up a tight win over Queensland with three balls remaining in a 40-over practice match at Allan Border Field in Brisbane today. Pakistan won by 15 runs after Queensland was bowled out for 179 in the 39th over. Pakistan made 8-194 in 40 overs. Off-spinner Nathan Hauritz gave Pakistan a taste of what to expect from its Super Challenge one-day international series against Australia next week by taking Queensland close to victory. Hauritz was overlooked by national selectors for the 13-man Australian squad for the three-match series in Melbourne and Brisbane after making his ODI debut in South Africa earlier this year. Today he showed he was capable of earning a recall, hitting an impressive 61 off 77 balls to accompany a disciplined bowling spell of 1-24 from eight overs in Pakistan's innings. Despite an 88-run seventh wicket partnership between Hauritz and left-hander Mitchell Johnson (33), Queensland was dismissed with three balls left in the innings. Evergreen Pakistan left-arm paceman Wasim Akram finished with 4-24 from seven overs while allrounder Shahid Afridi claimed 2-23 to go with his 52 in the Pakistan innings. Shoaib Akhtar, the world's fastest bowler, bowled with pace and aggression to claim 2-27 from six overs, including blasting a yorker past the bat of Queensland's Daniel Payne to dismiss him for a second ball duck. Pakistan will train tomorrow in Brisbane before travelling to Melbourne to prepare for Wednesday's opening match at Colonial Stadium. Queensland will play Australia tomorrow in a 40-over-a-side practice match at Allan Border Field. Earlier, lusty lower order hitting by Shoaib and wicketkeeper Rashid Latif helped Pakistan save face. Shoaib slammed 25 off 19 balls, including three fours and a six, and Latif chimed in with 25 off 36 balls © 2002 AAP
