Australian cricket coach John Buchanan will lead a three-day coaches' forum in Brisbane, beginning today, in a move to share cricket's knowledge and resources nationally.
The coaches' forum, which brings together Australia's first-class coaches, national selectors, team management and industry experts, will also feature an address from two-time AFL premiership coach Leigh Matthews.
Matthews will speak to the coaches and delegates about building a winning and successful culture in a team environment.
The forum takes place in Brisbane as Buchanan and the Australian team prepare for a training camp ahead of the three-match TOWER Super Challenge II at Colonial Stadium in Melbourne (June 12 and 15) and The Gabba in Brisbane (June 19).
At the forum, Buchanan will combine with newly appointed Commonwealth Bank Cricket Academy (CBCA) Head Coach Bennett King, to deliver discussion on a range of key cricket, playing and coaching issues.
Buchanan said the forum would help improve the lines of communication across state and national channels.
"The need for this type of forum stemmed from my previous role as coach of the Queensland Bulls. I've been involved with all levels of cricket and we need strong communication around the country to keep building our game and improving athlete performance," he said.
"It is important from a national perspective that the ideas we share, the technical expertise we deliver and the roles that each coach plays, follow a similar path.
"We don't want to stifle coaching creativity. The forum is designed to look forward, gain insights from industry experts, open communication streams and above all else, make sure we are all taking the game in the right direction."
The forum will feature presentation and discussion on cricket related matters including a focus on sport science, the impact of technology, player welfare, the CBCA Centre of Excellence, practical skills and coach education programs.
The forum comes at a timely and important stage in Australian cricket coaching. Season 2002-03 will mark the debut of three new coaches at first-class level.
David Hookes (Victoria), Brian McFadyen (Tasmania) and Terry Oliver (Queensland) were all appointed as state coaches in April this year.
This trio joins Greg Chappell (South Australia), Steve Rixon (New South Wales) and Michael Veletta (Western Australia) to make up Australia's state team coaches.
CBCA Head Coach Bennett King will oversee player development at the new-look academy and the forum will be an important link to assist his task of integrating the role of the national academy and developing first-class cricketers.
"We are at an interesting stage in Australian coaching. The field itself is constantly evolving and expanding. It is important to be aware of what is currently happening, what the future holds and linking our cricket structures nationwide," said King.
"The forum will be a great opportunity to bring together the coaches from various backgrounds and levels of experience and it will be a fantastic professional development exercise for all involved."
The coaches' forum was first held two years ago as part of the Australian Cricket Board Sports Science and Medicine forum in Melbourne. It was not held last year due to the 2001 Travelex Australian Tour of the UK in July.
