Leaders in control as Lancashire struggle
Stephen Lamb - 1 June 2002

Surrey have taken a firm grip on their Frizzell County Championship match at Old Trafford. Lancashire, replying to Surrey's 382, closed on 163 for seven in their first innings, still 219 behind. A century from Jonathan Batty boosted Surrey's final total this morning, as Gary Keedy finished with five for 122. James Ormond and Saqlain Mushtaq then took two wickets each as the home side provided little Jubilee cheer for their supporters.

The game between Leicestershire and Yorkshire is evenly poised after Devon Malcolm added to his 1,000th first-class wicket this morning, ending with six for 72. Yorkshire were all out for 310, with Richard Blakey left stranded on 48. Michael Bevan then ensured that his team passed the visitors' total, with 142 as Leicestershire were all out for 346. In the two overs remaining Yorkshire reduced the deficit by a single run.

John Crawley continued his Hampshire form with 68 at The Rose Bowl, but received limited support as his team reached 245 for seven in reply to Warwickshire's 250. Earlier Alan Mullally finished with six for 56 after polishing off the Warwickshire tail. Dougie Brown took three wickets for Warwickshire.

At Tunbridge Wells, Sussex have so far made a better fist of their second innings than they did of their first. A century opening stand between Murray Goodwin (41*) and Richard Montgomerie (68*) enabled them to close on 117 for no wicket, still 46 runs behind. Earlier Mark Ealham made an unbeaten 83 to boost Kent's final total to 343. James Kirtley finished with four for 88.

Derbyshire have continued their excellent run in Division Two, beating Glamorgan by nine wickets at Derby. The visitors were forced to follow on, bowled out in their first innings for 157. Kevin Dean was Derbyshire's bowling hero with seven for 42 in the first innings, and another two wickets as Glamorgan were dismissed for 200 second time round, leaving Derbyshire requiring just four runs for victory. This they achieved for the loss of Stephen Stubbings, lbw to Michael Kasprowicz for a duck.

Middlesex are making a fair fight of it after Durham racked up a gargantuan 645 for six before declaring. Martin Love made 251 and Gordon Muchall 127 towards that, before Middlesex captain Andy Strauss fell four runs short of becoming the game's third centurion. At stumps Middlesex had reached 167 for two, still 478 runs behind.

Essex are battling it out at Northampton in the face of a total of similar magnitude. Half centuries from Tony Penberthy, Tobin Bailey and Ricky Anderson boosted Northants' overnight total to 632, but Darren Robinson (62) and James Middlebrook (55*) ensured that the bowlers' misery continued. At stumps Essex were 186 for two in reply.

Worcestershire look victory bound at Bristol after bowling Gloucestershire out for 130. Kabir Ali did the bulk of the damage with five for 32. An opening stand of 148 between Anurag Singh (139*) and Phil Weston (54) then rubbed salt into West Country wounds as Worcestershire ended the day on 243 for one, exactly 400 runs ahead.
