Murray Goodwin affirms Warriors position Western Australia Cricket Association - 31 July 2002
Western Warriors batsman Murray Goodwin today declared his allegiance to West Australian cricket Goodwin vehemently denied he has considered resuming his international career with homeland Zimbabwe, as has been reported over the past week. Goodwin issued a statement from England where he is playing county cricket for Sussex. He refuted claims that he had approached the Zimbabwe Cricket Union to initiate discussions on a possible return in time to play domestic cricket and to be considered for the forthcoming World Cup early next year. "The ZCU had approached me earlier this year seeking an indication as to my interest in playing in the World Cup," Goodwin said. "I said no to that approach and that I would not consider playing for Zimbabwe if I have to live there. "I also have no intention of living in England, even though I have one year (2003) left on my contract with Sussex. "I have a contract with Western Australia and consider myself a valued player. I am looking forward to the coming Australian season with the Warriors." Warriors coach Mike Veletta welcomed Goodwin's proclaimed loyalty to WA's plans for success in the approaching season. "Murray is a valuable member of our Western Warriors," Veletta said today. "Despite some average performances by his high standards over the past 12 months we, as always, encourage Murray's role as a senior member of our group and welcome his input, both on and off the field. "We respect his vast cricketing experience, the majority of which has been gained here in Western Australia. "We look forward to him making a positive contribution again with our squad next season." © 2002 Western Australian Cricket Association
