SPCL 2 - Title race down to a potential two Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo) - 28 July 2002
Easton & Martyr Worthy have lined up a potential Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 championship decider against the Hampshire Academy at Cockets Mead on Saturday after shattering United Services' promotion dreams. The tractor boys moved to within a solitary point of the Academy at the top of the table after hammering United Services by 118 runs at Burnaby Road. Second-wicket pair Francis Gill (63) and Dave Birch (60) put Easton firmly in the driving seat with a century stand. Steve Green's hard hit 57 and a tidy knock by Kevin Neave (31) took Easton to 249-6 - and out of sight of Services, who collapsed to a third successive defeat. Without Royal Navy captain Pete Andrew, US lacked any real fight and sank steadily to 131 all out. Paul Baker (52) and Raj Naik hit half-centuries as Winchester KS pushed Trojans deeper into the Division 2 relegation mire with an eight-wicket victory at River Park. Mark Goodall (49) and Mario Mohamed (44) top scored in Trojans' 191-7 but, after Baker was dismissed at 115-2, Winchester cruised home through Naik (52 not out) and Jimmy Taylor (42 not out). Spare a thought for National Village Championship quarter-finalists Rowledge, who piled up 271-9 at Sparsholt ... only to lose by one run ! Tim Richings (121) and Kevin Foyle (69 not out) dominated Sparsholt's 272-4, but Rowledge hit back after slipping to 91-4 (David Lloyd 48). Jeff Anning (51) and Sean Woodhouse (46) lit the fuse, with Chris Yates senior smashing a quick-fire 47 - only to be caught off Andy Lang (4-42) with Rowledge seven runs short of a remarkable win. They eventually finished one run behind at 271-9. Wickets tumbled at an alarming rate at Romsey, where Stuart Tulk was the hero of Old Tauntonians & Romsey's one-wicket win over Hungerford. Nineteen wickets in all fell for 239 runs, with OTR's last pair chisseling out 12 runs to secure victory. Only Nick Wilton (39) and Steve Wyatt (33) reached double figures as Nick Wood (4-20) and Max Smith (3-16) built up Jeremy Ord's two-wicket start to bowl Hungerford out for 119. OTR were cruising home at 97-4 (Mike Trodd 30), but collapsed against Paul Warren (4-16) and Jason Williams (3-49). But last pair Stuart Tulk (34 not out) and Wood eked out 12 crucial runs at the end to give OTR a one-wicket win. © SPCL / Daily Echo / Mike Vimpany
