The Australian Cricket Board (ACB) today announced it will appoint an Assistant Coach/Performance Analyst of the Australian cricket team in September.
The new full-time role will be part of Australian team management, which currently consists of a Team Manager, Coach, Physiotherapist, Physical Performance Manager and Cricket Analyst. The Assistant Coach/Performance Analyst will take on the responsibilities of the Cricket Analyst.
The position follows a review of the team management structure and the important function it has in providing support to the Australian cricket team.
ACB Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the review was prompted by an increased demand for flexibility and support for the current coaching resources.
"It is clear that performance analysis and technical expertise are now critical components of cricket coaching at the highest level," Mr Sutherland said.
"The Australian team has been well serviced in this area in the past, but we believe closer focus on the technical component of elite performance will complement the existing coaching structure."
Mr Sutherland said that for the team to continue its on-field success, it is important to have the necessary resources, knowledge and measures in place off-field.
"The team management function is crucial to the Australian cricket team's performance. The resources act as the side's backbone."
The Assistant Coach/Performance Analyst position is an expansion of the existing Cricket Analyst role and will include the high-level coaching component.
The dual-function role will assist with the technical and practical coaching of Australian players, analyse the performance of Australia and its opponents and coordinate the video analysis and computer software operations.
Australian coach John Buchanan said the position would provide flexibility and support for the Australian team.
"My role will not change in that I will still oversee the coaching of the Australian team but to have someone help deliver an increased range of skills, including better application of technology, will provide a tremendous support," Buchanan said.
Buchanan said the role of coaching at the elite level is constantly expanding and evolving.
"It's a dynamic environment and the needs and performance demands of our athletes are changing," he said.
"To resource these needs adequately means we must have a number of multi-skilled people who can fulfill the various capacities required to support the Australian team."
The new team management structure from September 2002 will be:
Stephen Bernard | NSW | Team Manager |
John Buchanan | QLD | Coach |
Errol Alcott | NSW | Physiotherapist |
Jock Campbell | NSW | Physical Performance Manager |
