Jones in line to make England debut at Lord`s
Andrew Hignell - 22 July 2002

Darren Gough today pulled out of the 1st Test against India at Lord`s after suffering pain and stiffness in his troublesome right knee during Yorkshire's Championship match against Lancashire. This could be good news for Glamorgan pace bowler Simon Jones who had been included in the original 13 man party for the Test at Lord`s.

When announcing the squad, England`s Chairman of Selectors David Graveney gave a strong hint that 23-year-old Jones would make his debut should Gough prove to be unfit. Following Gough`s withdrawl, the selectors will be meeting to consider calling up a replacement, but with other pace bowlers either out of form or injured, Simon Jones could be making his England debut on Thursday, and following in his father Jeff`s footsteps by winning his first England cap before winning his Glamorgan one.

Jeff Jones won the first of his 15 Tests caps on the 1963-64 M.C.C. tour to India by appearing in the 2nd Test of the series at the Brabourne Stadium in Bombay. Glamorgan fan`s will be hoping that Simon Jones enjoys more luck than his father did back in January 1964, as he bowled 24 overs without taking a wicket and it was not until December 30th, 1965 that Jones senior claimed his maiden Test wicket, bowling Peter Burge at Melbourne in the second Test of the 1965/66 Ashes series.
