Somerset will face Worcestershire in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy quarter final at Taunton on Wednesday without the services of their England bowler Andy Caddick who has failed in his attempt to recover from a side strain.

The Cidermen's other strike bowler Richard Johnson will have a final run out in the morning before deciding whether to play or not.

Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: " `Johnno' has come through two sessions today, and providing there are no ill effects in the morning he will have a final test tomorrow. His chances of playing are 50-50, so we have brought Paul Jarvis into the squad."

Regarding Jarvis the Somerset coach told me: "We are here to put the best team in the field that we can, and in the situation that we are in because of injuries,if that means bringing back someone who retired from the first class game two years ago then we will. `Jarv' is the ideal person to bring in. He bowled excellently for us on Sunday and he didn't let us down. He is highly competitive and gives it everything that he's got"

Everybody at the club is only too well aware of how important this match is. Jamie Cox told me: "This is a huge match for us. If we lose we are out of the competition."

The coach told me: "We need a result to keep going in the competition.The difference between this year and last year is that we had all of our players fit and available, but on the day many things can happen."

Somerset will be boosted by the returning England hero Marcus Trescothick, who will captain the side, and the return of Jamie Cox who is fit again after breaking his thumb at Bath a month ago.
