SPCL 2&3 - Pryke flies through as top four play in Div 3
Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo) - 3 July 2002

David Pryke, the South African pace bowler with the "windmill" action, jets into the Lymington Sports Ground tomorrow (SAT) to put the town club's Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 promotion prospects under threat.

Lymington, 18 points behind leaders United Services, have moved into a challenging third spot after winning their last two matches. But the presence of Pryke spearheading the Hungerford attack could put a different complexion on the outcome of the game.

Pryke, who is to make only three appearances for the Berkshire side on a whistle stop visit to the UK, took 75 wickets in two seasons for Hungerford in 1999 and 2000 - in between times snapping up 5-32 against the England tourists for his native North West Province.

"Pryke is a very difficult bowler to face. He bowls quick inswinging yorkers into the batsman's block-hole," warns Lymington opener Glyn Treagus, who will face the South African at close quarter.

Lymington know they must avenge an opening day defeat at Hungerford - who lie in a lean eighth place out of ten - and beat Old Tauntonians & Romsey next week if they are to make a realistic promotion challenge.

But Western Australian Under-19 all-rounder Aaron Heal is looking good - an unbeaten 94 against Easton & Martyr Worthy lifting the Perth youngster into sixth place in the Division 2 scoring charts.

Leaders United Services expect to be at full strength against mid-table Winchester KS at River Park, while the Hampshire Academy will again keep their selections open for the visit to Sparsholt.

The Young Hawks lie just one point behind US will probably include either Jimmy Adams or Lawrie Prittipaul as one of their four professionals.

Sparsholt, boosted by the likely return of left-arm swing bowler Mike Ball, face Rowledge in the National Village Championship sixth round at the Norman Edwards Memorial Ground on Sunday, 2pm.

Easton & Martyr Worthy, beaten at Lymington last week, need to return to winning ways against Trojans, who are struggling at the foot of the table with only one win from nine games.

OTs & Romsey are again without Ian Tulk for the visit to Rowledge, whose own strength is sapped by the absence of newly-wed all-rounder Chris Yates.

It's a key afternoon in Premier Division 3, where the top four clubs play each other.

Alton's home match with high scoring Purbrook is the main attraction - Julian Ballinger's side knowing how important it is to dismiss 463-run South African Willem Prozesky, who hammered a best yet 153 at Hartley Wintney last week.

"We've been in good form for the past two weeks, beating St Cross Symondians and Leckford, but it's going to be a terrific game," Ballinger forecast.

St Cross are unchanged against Flamingo's, who have won their last five games to climb into a highest-ever third place in the SEPL.

Waiting in the wings for any slip up are Hursley Park, who entertain Paultons, who have won their last two matches after experiencing an indifferent start to the season.

It's an equally crucial day at the bottom, with basement boys Hook & Newnham Basics entertaining Redlynch & Hale, the club immediately above them in the table.
