Winner medallions for Pollock and Carter
Keith Lane - 1 July 2002

With the last Benson & Hedges final, due to the ban on tobacco sponsorships, having been played at Lords on 22 June 2002 Shaun Pollock and Neil Carter now hold winner medallions as Warwickshire beat Essex by five wickets.

Pollock (1/32) and Carter (2/45) both bowled economically in their ten over spells helping to restrict Essex's to 181. Pollock scored 34 off 31 balls to help Warwickshire reach the target after 36.2 overs. Carter did not bat.

The Norwich Union limited overs league saw most County teams in action with some of the South Africans continuing their form.

Pollock (2/27) and Carter (2/50) again bowled well and both were at the wicket when overs ran out leaving Warwickshire 4 runs short of the Worcestershire total. Pollock scoring an undefeated 111 in 88 balls and Carter ending on five after two balls.

In a second fixture during the week Warwickshire also beat Kent by 19 runs after rain reduced the Warwickshire target. Carter took 1/39 and scored 10 with the bat while Pollock did not bat after taking 1/44.

Andrew Gait was on the winning Derbyshire team scoring 16 against Lancashire.

Mark Davis in a win for Sussex against Surrey scored six and took 1/19, following this up with a loss against Middlesex scoring eight not out and not taking any wickets. Sven Koenig managed 43 not out for Middlesex.

Nicky Boje scored 86, the highest of his season, and took 1/25 in a five wicket win for Nottinghamshire over Leicestershire. Kevin Pieterson assisted the Nottingham cause with a 30 not out.

The last round of the Cheltenham & Gloucester Trophy was completed with most of the South Africans being knocked out of the quarter final stage.

Kent reversed the Warwickshire result with a 128 run win with Pollock (1/40) and nine and Carter (1/45) and six seeing their team go out of the competition.

Neil Johnson with 52 runs and 2/42 with the ball and Nick Pothas with a 10 not out are also out after Somerset beat Hampshire by six wickets.

Davis (0/43) and Allan Donald (1/24, the wicket of Boje) will advance as Sussex beat Leicestershire and Worcestershire beat Nottinghamshire. For Nottinghamshire Pieterson scored 24 and took 0/23 while Boje scored eight and took 1/48 in the eight wicket loss.

In the County Championship Davis scored a 70 not out in a draw between Sussex and Yorkshire. Davis also took 2/11 in the second Yorkshire innings.

Somerset lost to Warwickshire with Pollock scoring nine and ten and taking 2/33 and 3/97 in the respective innings.

Middlesex beat Glamorgan with Koenig scoring 30 and 27 in the two innings he had for Middlesex.

Nottinghamshire not having a good two weeks also lost to Northamptonshire with Boje scoring 37 and 18 and returning figures of 3/115 and 0/51.
