Midlands cricket report
Michael Hudgson - 25 January 2002

Last weekend the Kwekwe first team entertained Bulawayo Sports Club at home. Kwekwe won the toss and decided to bat first.

Kwekwe scored 299 runs for seven wickets in their allotted 50 overs, the top scorers being Terrence Duffin with 112 runs, which included 9 fours and 1 six, and Dirk Viljoen with 77 runs, which included 8 fours. It was once again an excellent spell of batting by the Kwekwe batsmen who seem to be keeping Kwekwe on their winning way. The partnership between these two was worth 174 runs off 193 balls and lasted 120 minutes and included 16 fours and 1 six. These batsmen treated all the BSC spin bowlers with little respect.

Best bowler for BSC was Darshin Vaghamaria who took three for 55 in his ten overs, including the wicket of Dirk Viljoen.

BSC then batted after lunch and were dismissed for a total of 142 runs in 39 overs. The top scorer for BSC was Vaghamaria with 47 runs, which included 2 sixes and 5 fours in a very fine spell of attacking batting.

The best bowlers for the home team were John Vaughan-Davies who took four for 28 in nine overs and Campbell Macmillan who took four for 27 in 8.3 overs. It was a very impressive spell of bowling by all concerned.

Manish Ranchod was injured when he ducked into a short-pitched delivery from John Vaughan–Davies, which unfortunately hit him in the eye socket. The ball went between the visor and the grill on his helmet.

The second team hosted Takashinga Second Team and unfortunately were beaten by one run. Unfortunately at the time of going to press there are no results available with regard to this game.

Kwekwe Queens travelled to Harare to play against Sunrise and won this game, but once again there are no results for this game.

I am pleased to report yet again that the development sides here in the Midlands are doing well and continue to have their friendly games on Saturday mornings and there are plans underway for this little tournament to include the Gweru Sports Club side.

As far as all the proposed developments at the Kwekwe Sports Club go, the drainage system around the field is under way and seems to be working satisfactorily.
