India women complete 5-0 win over England
ECB - 24 January 2002

England have been beaten by India in Poona in the final women's one-day international of the five match series. England openers Caroline Atkins (Sussex) and Arran Thompson (Lancashire) built a solid foundation reaching 134, before Atkins was run out by India captain Anjum Chopra for 53. Thompson went on to make 65 with England finishing their innings on 180 for 6.

In reply, India's openers also produced a strong partnership with Anju Jain and Amrita Shinde reaching 117, before Jain was caught by Laura Newton from the bowling of Thompson. Amrita went on to score 78, the highest of the match, as India reached the required total with three overs remaining.

England captain Clare Connor said: "The 5-0 result is fair, but a massive disappointment. As a squad we've made some great strides, especially with the opening 'record-breaking' partnership of Caroline and Arran which has just got stronger and stronger during the tour. Missing four or five key players it was always going to be very tough, and we'll return to England, re-select the 18-strong training squad, and be a stronger unit.

"I'm very proud of all the players who have toured, several making their debuts for England. The spirit in the squad is sensational, even with results not going our way, it's the best I've ever known it, which says a lot about the strength of character and determination of all 14 players. The test match was a bonus, and we had an amazing first and final day.

"India is as fascinating, hospitable and disorganised as I remember! It's a difficult place to tour, and we've had a hectic schedule playing five one-day internationals and one test match in 19 days. It will be interesting to see how much better we can be in the summer when we're into our own season and playing at home."

India have won the ODI series 5-0, with the test match drawn, and will return to England this summer for the inaugural women's triangular tournament with current World Champions New Zealand in July. India and England will also play two test matches in August.
