ACB Melbourne big-screen to televise Australia Day blockbuster
ACB Media Release - 24 January 2002

Melbourne's central business district will take on a cricket-theme this Saturday 26 January as part of the city's Australia Day celebrations.

A 37 square metre super-screen will be set-up in the Alexandra Gardens for cricket fans to watch the sold-out VB Series blockbuster between Australia and New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval.

A joint initiative of the Australian Cricket Board (ACB), the City of Melbourne and the Australia Day Committee, the super-screen will be situated in parkland between Alexandra Avenue and the banks of the Yarra River.

ACB Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said the concept was about promoting the game in a social setting.

"International cricket on Australia Day is a long-standing tradition," Mr Sutherland said.

"As such the ACB is delighted that the City of Melbourne and the Australia Day Committee has included cricket in these celebrations.

"I encourage people to be part of Saturday's free activities and support the Australian team with pride on our national day," he said.

Spot prizes, including an autographed bat signed by the Australian one-day international team, will be on offer. Food and refreshments will also be available.

In addition to the big-screen telecast, interactive cricket activities such as MILO Kanga Cricket and a fastest-throw competition, will entertain cricket fans at the gardens.
